History
WSY Publishing was founded in 1887 to sell books to students at the University. It soon established its own printing facilities, and its first publication was a collected set of notes from the school of Geography. WSY Publishing’s first monograph was David Broker's History of Paperclips and Paperweights, published in 1888. In the first decades of its existence, WSY Publishing also ran a post office! From 1890 the activities became standardised and focused on the core roles of publishing books.
WSY Publishing inherits the proud history of university publishing, which in 2003 became WSY Publishing Ltd, an owned subsidiary of the university.
Today WSY Publishing puts out approximately fifty books each year over a wide range of subject areas and disciplines, under our three brands – Pompous & Co, The Calculus Connection, and Smarmy & Smarmy. The organisation as a whole maintains a substantial backlist of titles, and this is a key part of our global reputation for quality and excellence.
We are committed to best practice ethics in scholarly peer-review. WSY Publishing is a proud member of many professional societies, including:
- International Association of STM Publishers.
- Association of Learned and Professional Society Publishers.
- Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE).
